Jiří Antonín Benda - Hapsichord Concertos - Keglerová

"The eighteen century was a time of great change in society, philosophy, and art. Various encyclopaedias, for example, were compiled and published. Works were written in the new field of aesthetics and other disciplines. Concert series for the public were started up, using amateur musicians and musical societies that previously performed only privately. The Enlightenment, the philosophical movement emphasizing human reason and its diverse applications in understanding man, was penetrating all spheres and forms of life, both of the individual and society. It was in these eventful times that Jiri Antonín (Georg Anton) Benda (1722-1795) lived and composed. J.A.Benda - Harpsichord concertos - Václav Luks

"(Jiří Antonín Benda) had the opportunity to become intimately familiar with the milieu of the Prussian court. The Benda family had met with a fate similar to that thousands of other Protestants who in great numbers fled the Land of the Bohemian Crown in the period after the decisive Battle of the White Mountain (1620). (...) Franz (František) Benda, the brother of Georg (Jiří), was by that time a respected violinist and composer employed at the court of King Frederick the Great of Prussia (...) The Benda family settled in Potsdam near Berlin and the doors to the world of music opened wide to Georg (Jiří). In 1750 he entered the services of the Friederich III, the Duke of Gotha-Sax, and in 1765 Friederich III sent Benda on a six-month journey to study in Italy, (...) Benda's works from the Fifties and Sixties (chiefly sinfonie) clearly reveal the inspiration of Italian models (...) "but surely you know that of all Lutheran composers Benda is my favourite" he (Mozart) wrote to his father (...)"
[Václav Luks in the booklet]

Vranický, Benda, Rejcha - Viola concertos - Jan Pěruška

Antonín Vranický (1761-1820) "(...) The oeuvre of  Antonín Vranický almost entirely consists of instrumental compositions. Chamber music prevails, which is connected with his position of the chief conductor of the chateau music [of Prince Maximilian of Lobkowitz], but his legacy also comprises at least 14 symphonies and the same number of violin concertos, concertos for string instruments, hunting marches and many other compositions. The Lobokowitz Chateau archive, (...) contains a very large and valuable collection of compositions by  Antonín Vranický (...)"
Jiri Antonin Benda (1722-1795) "(...) found suitable ground for his artistic ambitions first in Berlin, Prussia then in Gotha Thüringen. (...) This member of a large musical family (...) wrote a predominant part of his oeuvre in the favorable art-loving environment of this [Thüringen] local court. (...) Benda's creative potential was very broad - he composed about 30 symphonies, instrumental concertos, chamber pieces as well as Italian incidental music. (...)"
Josef Rejcha (1752-1795) "(...) a composer, outstanding cellist and conductor (...) he met Leopold Mozart who highly appreciated Rejcha's musical skills (...) composed in the spirit of the famous Manheim School and his oeuvre comprises many chamber pieces, three instrumental concertos for cello and many concertos for string and wind instruments. (...)"
