"The eighteen century was a time of great change in society, philosophy, and art. Various encyclopaedias, for example, were compiled and published. Works were written in the new field of aesthetics and other disciplines. Concert series for the public were started up, using amateur musicians and musical societies that previously performed only privately. The Enlightenment, the philosophical movement emphasizing human reason and its diverse applications in understanding man, was penetrating all spheres and forms of life, both of the individual and society. It was in these eventful times that Jiri Antonín (Georg Anton) Benda (1722-1795) lived and composed.
