ResponderEliminarthis collaboration of Gieseking & Karajan is impressive, but i consider the earlier Gieseking rendition of Variations symphoniques (1931, with Sir Henry Wood conducting) as a benchmark. and his earlier recordings of Schumann under the baton of Furtwängler (1942) and Grieg under Heger (1944) at least are both worth listening.
And it's also curious the fact that Karajan is conducting not the Berliner Philarmoniker, but the Philarmonia Orchestra! (in fact it was the producer Walter Legge - the founder of the Philarmonia - that invited Karajan to be the principal conductor of this orchestra, until 1954 when he was elected music director of the Berliner Philarmoniker.)
