Rorate Coeli - Music for Advent and Christmas in Baroque Prague - Semeredová

"(...) At the time of Baroque, more present than today was the accent on Kenosis and Christ's mother, stemming from the ancient Roman tradition (at the time the entire Advent has a markedly Marian nature). In the Czech lands there was the tradition of Advent matin songs accompanying morning votive masses in honour of the Virgin Mary, and often sung in the national language. The introductory verse of the Introit of this mass reads "rorate coeli desuper" - "drop down dew, ye heavens from above". That is also the title of this recording in whose first part compositions focused on the Virgin Mary prevail. The perceptive listener will certainly not fail to hear the arrival of Christmas in the programme.(...)"

Jiránek - Concertos & Sinfonias - Semerádová

"We have heard a numerous tales of Czech musicians who started out at a humble country school and after their talent was spotted by the local nobility were sent to gain further education and, eventually, often found - either with the approval or against the will of their superior - employment beyond the borders of the Czech lands. In this respect, the story of the composer František Jiránek is not unusual. (...) We do not know when Jiránek started to compose; it seems probable that he was afforded the opportunity after the death of two composers of Morinz's orchestra in 1730. His oeuvre is made up exclusively of instrumental pieces, which indicates that he was a creative musician more of the "instrumentalist-cum-composer" type than a "professional composer", such as his late colleague from the orchestra Antonín Reichenauer. (...)"
