"It was a moving and deeply symbolic moment in the house's history when the seventy-nine-years-old Bruno Walter stepped on the podium of the Vienna State Opera that Sunday morning in November 1955, more then half a century after Gustav Mahler had invited his younger colleague and friend to join the Vienna Court Opera as first Kapellmeister from Hamburg, where the two men already worked alongside each other. This had been in 1901 (...) Walter's agreement not only to attend the gala reopening of the Vienna State Opera as a guest of honour but also to conduct a concert may be interpreted as a gesture of solidarity not just towards the institution but also towards its director [Karl Böhm](...) Bruno Walter's (...) concentrates entirely on the music, on its formal clarity and natural flow, prefering relatively brisk tempos in the instrumental movements (...)"
